In the early times it was known as Bews. Shafter was founded in 1906 as siding for the Nevada Northern Railway. In 1959, the post office has ended and it was the death of the town. Today the only remains are foundations. Although the town is abandoned, this particular section of the railroad is still called the Shafter Subdivision.
